What order does a bathroom renovation happen in?

E&R Construction · Published October 15, 2026

The short answer

Roughly demolition, then plumbing and electrical rough-in, then walls and waterproofing, then tile, then fixtures, then paint and finishing. Each trade depends on the one before it, which is why one team coordinating them all keeps a renovation moving.

A bathroom is small, but almost every trade passes through it. Knowing the order helps you understand the schedule and why steps cannot be skipped.

1. Planning and permits

Decide the layout, fixtures and finishes before anything is torn out. If plumbing is being added or moved, a building permit may be needed; check with the City of Ottawa.

2. Demolition

Old fixtures, tile and damaged drywall come out. This is often when hidden problems show up, such as rot under a toilet or behind a shower.

3. Framing and rough-in

Walls are adjusted, blocking is added for grab bars and vanities, and the new supply and drain lines are run. Electrical work, such as new outlets, lights and the exhaust fan, is done by a licensed electrician at this stage.

4. Walls and waterproofing

Moisture-resistant board goes up, and showers and tub surrounds get a waterproofing layer before any tile is set.

5. Tile

Floor and wall tile are set, then grouted and sealed.

6. Fixtures

The vanity, toilet, tub or shower fixtures and faucets are installed and connected.

7. Paint and finishing

Walls are painted, and trim, mirrors, lighting and accessories go in.
